{"id":46789,"date":"2025-04-26T15:30:27","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T10:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=46789"},"modified":"2025-10-11T12:40:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T07:10:02","slug":"mycetoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mycetoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Mycetoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Mycetoma Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The world&#8217;s only research centre on mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease common among farmers, has been destroyed in Sudan&#8217;s two-year war, its director and another expert say.<\/p>\n<h2>About Mycetoma<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>chronic<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>progressively destructive infectious disease of\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>subcutaneous tissues,\u00a0<\/strong>that\u00a0<strong>spreads to affect the skin, deep tissues and bone.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was first reported in the mid-19th century in Madurai, India, and hence was initially called Madura foot.<\/li>\n<li>It is a unique\u00a0<strong>neglected tropical diseasecaused by<\/strong>\u00a0a substantial number of microorganisms of\u00a0<strong>fungal or bacterial origins.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The disease\u00a0<strong>commonly affects young adults,<\/strong>\u00a0mostly males aged between 15 and 30 years in developing countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mycetoma Distribution\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Mycetoma occurs in\u00a0<strong>tropical and subtropical environments<\/strong>\u00a0characterized by\u00a0<strong>short rainy seasons and prolonged dry seasons\u00a0<\/strong>that favour the growth of thorny bushes.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>causative organisms<\/strong>\u00a0of mycetoma are distributed worldwide but are\u00a0<strong>endemic in tropical and subtropical areas<\/strong>\u00a0in the so called &#8216;<strong>Mycetoma belt&#8217;,\u00a0<\/strong>which includes, among others, the Bolivarian Republic of\u00a0<strong>Venezuela<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chad, Ethiopia, India, Mauritania<\/strong>, Mexico, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan,\u00a0<strong>Thailand,<\/strong>\u00a0and Yemen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mycetoma Transmission\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Transmission occurs when the causative organism<strong>\u00a0enters the body through minor trauma or<\/strong>\u00a0a penetrating\u00a0<strong>injury<\/strong>, commonly thorn pricks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>There is a clear association between mycetoma and\u00a0<strong>individuals who walk barefooted<\/strong>\u00a0and are\u00a0<strong>manual workers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mycetoma Symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms are\u00a0<strong>similar for bacterial and fungal mycetoma.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Both\u00a0<strong>appear as firm, painless masses under the skin<\/strong>.
