help determine when the volcano will next erupt, a new study has found.<\/p>\n<h2>About Yellowstone Supervolcano<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It lies\u00a0<strong>beneath\u00a0<\/strong>Y<strong>ellowstone National Park,\u00a0<\/strong>in the western\u00a0<strong>United States.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>one of the largest active volcanic systems<\/strong>\u00a0in the world.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s a caldera<\/strong>\u00a0(a large crater formed by a major eruption) and an active supervolcanic system.<\/li>\n<li>The caldera measures 55 x 72 km (34 x 45 miles) in size.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The caldera formed when\u00a0<strong>pyroclastic material exploded\u00a0<\/strong>out of the volcano, partly\u00a0<strong>emptying the magma chamber causing the roof to collapse.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>When the roof collapsed over the magma chamber, it\u00a0<strong>created a bowl shaped depression in the ground.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three enormous eruptionsoccurred\u00a0<\/strong>at the Yellowstone hotspot 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two of thesereleased so much material<\/strong>\u00a0that the area is o<strong>ften referred to as a supervolcano.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A supervolcano\u00a0<\/strong>is a\u00a0<strong>volcano that at one point\u00a0<\/strong>in time\u00a0<strong>erupted more than 1,000 cubic kilometers of deposits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>One\u00a0<strong>recent study estimates<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>another supervolcanic eruption at Yellowstone\u00a0<\/strong>would\u00a0<strong>blanket North America in ash,\u00a0<\/strong>and some areas close to the hotspot could be covered by more than a meter of debris.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supervolcanoes can also have pronounced cooling effects\u00a0<\/strong>on the climate<strong>\u00a0for several years<\/strong>\u00a0after an eruption\u00a0<strong>because of the sulfur dioxide that is released<\/strong>\u00a0to the atmosphere.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>sulfur dioxide forms aerosols that block incoming sunlight.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Eventually, the sulfur dioxide from the eruption will wash out of
