{"id":4713,"date":"2024-08-19T09:38:08","date_gmt":"2024-08-19T04:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4713"},"modified":"2025-03-27T01:59:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T20:29:15","slug":"what-is-national-coal-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-national-coal-index\/","title":{"rendered":"What is National Coal Index?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About National Coal Index (NCI):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The NCI is a <strong>price index<\/strong> which <strong>reflects the change in<\/strong> the <strong>price level of coal in a particular month relative to<\/strong> the fixed <strong>base year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>NCI <strong>combines the prices<\/strong> of coal <strong>from all the sales channels<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Notified Prices, Auction Prices, and Import Prices.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been rolled out on 4th June 2020, and the aim is to have an index that will truly reflect the market price.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>concept and design<\/strong> of the index as well as the <strong>representative prices<\/strong> have been <strong>developed by <\/strong>the <strong>Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>released every month by<\/strong> the <strong>Ministry of Coal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>base year is FY 2017-18.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The index is meant to <strong>encompass all transactions of raw coal<\/strong> in the Indian market.<\/li>\n<li>This <strong>includes coking and non-coking<\/strong> of various grades transacted <strong>in the regulated<\/strong> (power and fertilizer) <strong>and non-regulated sectors.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Washed coal and coal products<\/strong> are <strong>not included.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>NCI&#8217;s upward movement indicates rising demand for coal<\/strong>, which will encourage coal producers to take maximum benefit by further scaling-up domestic coal production to meet the growing energy demands.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>downward trajectory<\/strong> of the NCI signifies a <strong>more equitable market<\/strong>, harmonizing supply and demand dynamics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Coal?<\/h3>\n<p>Coal is a sedimentary deposit composed predominantly of carbon that is readily combustible. Coal is black or brownish-black, and has a composition that (including inherent moisture) consists of more than 50 percent by weight and more than 70 percent by volume of carbonaceous material.
