


{"id":4721,"date":"2023-01-18T06:05:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T00:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4721"},"modified":"2025-03-27T02:01:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T20:31:43","slug":"who-are-nattukotai-nagarathas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/who-are-nattukotai-nagarathas\/","title":{"rendered":"Who are Nattukotai Nagarathas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Nattukotai Nagarathas:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Also called Nattukottai Chettiars, Nagarathas are a people of <strong>Indian origin, well known for their financial dealings <\/strong>and hospitality.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are f<strong>ollowers of the Hindu religion<\/strong> and worship the <strong>Shiva and Muruga deities<\/strong> of the Hindu faith.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>belong to a very prolific Business Community<\/strong>, who in olden days<strong> moved out of India to foreign lands<\/strong> like Burma, Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Singapore &amp; Vietnam (Saigon) .<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>hail from a place called Chettinad<\/strong>, an area situated in the South-Eastern region of Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>considered the pioneers of modern banking.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>introduced concepts like pattru (debit), varavu (credit), selavu (expenditure), laabam (profit) and nashtam (loss)<\/strong>. These are all <strong>collectively known as iynthogai (trial balance)<\/strong> &#8211; a unified document which reflects the current financial status of the business at any given time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>They created 96 villages and built 9 temples with each family owing allegiance to a single temple only.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Nagarathars <strong>were the primary providers of capital to Burmese cultivators <\/strong>through much of the colonial period.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Chettinad region:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost centrally located in the southern Indian state of Tamil N\u0101du, Chettinad is a culturally and historically important region <strong>famous for its unique cuisine, agriculture and architecture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The origin of Chettinad <strong>begins in the 13th century<\/strong> when the Nattukottai Chettiars migrated to Karaikudi.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>new settlement eventually became the Chettinad region (Land of the Chettiars)<\/strong> of 96 villages (in 1947,) but now due to the movement of people out of certain villages, has diminished to about 75 villages.<\/li>\n<li>Chettinad has <strong>well planned towns provided with well defined roadways, reservoirs to store and supply water to the town, a planned market place, temples <\/strong>and everything, providing the basic needs of people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1<strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0What is Pongal?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community.
