However, it was rare for more than 260 prisoners to occupy the island at one time.<\/li>\n<li>Alcatraz was considered to be the<strong>\u00a0most inescapable prison in the United States.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A few inmates did escape\u00a0<\/strong>the island. However, it is unlikely that they survived the currents of San Francisco Bay.<\/li>\n<li>Eventually, the\u00a0<strong>cost of maintaining<\/strong>\u00a0the prison\u00a0<strong>resulted in its closing in March 1963.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In 1972 Alcatraz became part of the newly created Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
