Mountains (GSM) were formed over 500 million years ago, during the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSM)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains<\/strong>\u00a0are a\u00a0<strong>completely buried mountain range<\/strong>\u00a0beneath the\u00a0<strong>East Antarctic Ice Sheet<\/strong>, located at its highest point.<\/li>\n<li>These mountains were first discovered in\u00a0<strong>1958<\/strong>\u00a0by a\u00a0<strong>Soviet seismic expedition<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike the\u00a0<strong>Transantarctic Mountains<\/strong>, which are partially visible above the ice, the\u00a0<strong>Gamburtsev Mountains remain entirely buried<\/strong>, concealed under several kilometres of ice.<\/li>\n<li>Typically,\u00a0<strong>mountains form at tectonic plate boundaries<\/strong>\u00a0due to\u00a0<strong>collision or analysed\u00a0<strong>zircon grains<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong>sandstones<\/strong>\u00a0deposited by ancient rivers flowing from the mountains, collected from the\u00a0<strong>Prince Charles Mountains<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zircons<\/strong>\u00a0contain trace\u00a0<strong>uranium<\/strong>, which decays at a\u00a0<strong>known radioactive rate<\/strong>, enabling accurate age
