land acquisition needed to build a new arterial road under the much-debated Great Nicobar Holistic Development Project.<\/p>\n<h2>About Great Nicobar Island<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>southernmost island of the Nicobar Islands\u00a0<\/strong>archipelago.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>separated from\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>Andaman Islands by the Ten Degree Channel.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It covers an area of 1044 sq.km.<\/li>\n<li>It remains\u00a0<strong>sparsely populated<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>dense tropical rainforests covering\u00a0<\/strong>more than\u00a0<strong>85% of its area.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its coastline features over\u00a0<strong>100 kilometers of untouched beaches,<\/strong>\u00a0renowned for their stunning\u00a0<strong>coral reefs and crystal-clear waters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also\u00a0<strong>home to Indira Point, India&#8217;s southernmost point,<\/strong>\u00a0located less than 150 km from Indonesia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mount Thullier,<\/strong>\u00a0which is about 2,105 ft high, is the\u00a0<strong>highest peak.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Galathea, Alexandra, and Dagmar\u00a0<\/strong>are the\u00a0<strong>major rivers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>major tribes<\/strong>\u00a0in Great Nicobar Island are the\u00a0<strong>Shompens and the Nicobarese.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is home to the\u00a0<strong>Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated site.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Biodiversity<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It houses 650 species of angiosperms, ferns, gymnosperms, bryophytes, and lichens, among others.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The tract is rich in plant diversity and fosters a number of\u00a0<strong>rare and endemic species,<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0<strong>Cyathea albosetacea (tree fern) and Phalaenopsis speciosa (orchid).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The region also harbours a large number of endemic and endangered species of fauna.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>To date, 11 species of mammals, 32 species of birds, 7 species of reptiles and 4 species of amphibians have been found to be endemic.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Of these, the well-known\u00a0<strong>Crab-eating Macaque, Nicobar Tree Shrew, Dugong,\u00a0<\/strong>N<strong>icobar Megapode, Serpent Eagle,\u00a0<\/strong>saltwater crocodile, marine turtles and
