


{"id":47904,"date":"2026-06-20T11:20:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T05:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=47904"},"modified":"2026-06-20T13:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T08:08:12","slug":"dongria-kondh-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/dongria-kondh-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Dongria Kondh Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Dongria Kondh Tribe Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dongria Kondh tribes who inhabit the Niyamgiri hills across Rayagada and Kalahandi districts in southwestern Odisha for whom forests, food and faith shape their daily life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Dongria Kondh Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) Community.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dongria Kondhs are ancient occupants of <\/span><b>Niyamgiri hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spread across Kalahandi and Rayagada districts <\/span><b>of Odisha.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>derive their name from dongar,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning \u2018hill\u2019 and the name for themselves is Jharnia: protector of streams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Belief: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They trace their <\/span><b>ancestry to Niyam Raja,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a mythical god-king, who they believe is a creator of the Niyamgiri hills and whose stewardship has been left to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Culture and Society<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dongria have distinctive <\/span><b>jewellery, tattoos and hairstyles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Women wear many rings through their ears and three through their noses, while boys wear two nose rings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have no <\/span><b>overarching political or religious leader<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clans and villages have their own leaders and individuals with specific ceremonial functions, including the <\/span><b>beju and bejuni, male and female priests.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Language:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They speak two languages namely <\/span><b>\u201ckuyi\u201d and \u201ckuvi\u201d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vocabulary which is completely unrelated to odiya, the state\u2019s official language.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the Dongria Kondh tribe <\/span><b>perform a traditional dance at Phakeri.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Economy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The economy and livelihood of Dongria kondh is dependent on <\/span><b>collection of Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and podu cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
