


{"id":47966,"date":"2025-05-24T14:59:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-24T09:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=47966"},"modified":"2025-05-29T16:00:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T10:30:19","slug":"state-of-the-worlds-animal-health-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/state-of-the-worlds-animal-health-report\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the World\u2019s Animal Health Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>State of the World\u2019s Animal Health Report Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Infectious animal diseases are spreading to previously unaffected regions and species, with nearly half (47 percent) capable of zoonotic transmission according to the inaugural State of the World\u2019s Animal Health report released by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) recently.<\/p>\n<h2>About State of the World\u2019s Animal Health Report:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is released by the W<strong>orld Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It provides the\u00a0<strong>first comprehensive review of animal disease trends,<\/strong>\u00a0risks, and challenges, from the uptake and\u00a0<strong>availability of vaccines to the use of antibiotics<\/strong>\u00a0in animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Highlights of the State of the World\u2019s Animal Health Report:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I<strong>nfectious animal diseases<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>spreading to previously unaffected regions<\/strong>\u00a0and species, with nearly half (<strong>47 percent) capable of zoonotic transmission.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bird flu,\u00a0<\/strong>or high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), which has caused the culling or loss of more than 630 million birds in the last two decades, was\u00a0<strong>one of several animal diseases to affect new areas last year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Peste des petits ruminants (PPR)<\/strong>, which has traditionally affected sheep and goats in developing countries, has\u00a0<strong>re-emerged in Europe<\/strong>\u00a0while\u00a0<strong>African swine fever (ASF) reached Sri Lanka,<\/strong>\u00a0travelling more than 1,800 km from the nearest outbreaks.<\/li>\n<li>In 2024, there were a further 3,517 cases of\u00a0<strong>Bluetongue, an insect-borne virus\u00a0<\/strong>that spreads among livestock, in 23 countries, while Germany experienced its first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease since 1988.<\/li>\n<li>In Mexico, vets reported the first case of\u00a0<strong>New World screwworm, a parasitic fly\u00a0<\/strong>whose larvae eat the flesh of warm-blooded animals. The disease has also re-emerged in Nicaragua.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Almost\u00a0<strong>half of the WOAH-listed diseases notified to WOAH between 2005 and 2023<\/strong>\u00a0were\u00a0<strong>considered a threat to human health<\/strong>\u00a0with zoonotic, or animal-to-human infection, potential.<\/li>\n<li>The report cited\u00a0<strong>climate change<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>increased trade\u00a0<\/strong>among the\u00a0<strong>factors influencing the spread\u00a0<\/strong>and prevalence of animal diseases.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Many are preventable through a combination of vaccination, improved hygiene, and biosecurity measure<\/strong>s, but the report noted that\u00a0<strong>access to animal vaccines remains uneven<\/strong>\u00a0around the world.<\/li>\n<li>The report also\u00a0<strong>emphasised\u00a0<\/strong>the i<strong>mportance of disease prevention for reducing<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>need for antibiotic treatment<\/strong>\u00a0andlimiting the development of drug-resistant diseases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By 2050, antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>projected to<\/strong>\u00a0cause livestock losses that<strong>\u00a0jeopardise the food security<\/strong>\u00a0of two billion people and result in a US$ 100 trillion economic loss if urgent action is not taken.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antimicrobial use,<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0<strong>antibiotics<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0in animals fell five percent\u00a0<\/strong>between\u00a0<strong>2020 and 2022<\/strong>, with use in Europe seeing the biggest decline of 23 percent, followed by Africa at 20 percent.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>However,\u00a0<strong>one in five countries continues to use antimicrobials as growth promoters,\u00a0<\/strong>which is\u00a0<strong>discouraged by WOAH.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The WOAH,\u00a0<strong>formerly\u00a0<\/strong>known as the\u00a0<strong>Office International des Epizooties (OIE),<\/strong>\u00a0is an\u00a0<strong>intergovernmental organization<\/strong>\u00a0that focuses on improving animal health worldwide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>founded in 1924 in response to rinderpest outbreaks\u00a0<\/strong>in livestock.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was renamed as WOAH in 2022 to reflect its global
