{"id":4808,"date":"2025-12-20T11:55:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T06:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4808"},"modified":"2025-12-20T13:27:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T07:57:17","slug":"what-is-doppler-weather-radar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-doppler-weather-radar\/","title":{"rendered":"Doppler Weather Radar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Doppler Weather Radar Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Minister of State for Earth Science informed that there are currently 47 Doppler weather radars (DWRs) across the country to survey weather patterns and forecast.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Doppler Weather Radar<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Doppler radar is a specialized radar that <\/span><b>uses the Doppler effect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to produce <\/span><b>velocity data about objects at a distance.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These radar systems can provide information regarding the <\/span><b>movement of targets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as <\/span><b>their position.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Working of Doppler weather Radars<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In radars, a beam of energy, <\/span><b>called radio waves,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is emitted from an antenna.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this beam strikes an object in the atmosphere, the energy scatters in all directions, with some <\/span><b>reflecting directly back to the radar.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>larger the object<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deflecting the beam, the <\/span><b>greater is the amount of energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the radar receives in return.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observing the time required for the <\/span><b>beam to be transmitted and returned<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the radar allows weather forecasting departments to \u201csee\u201d raindrops in the atmosphere, and measure their distance from the radar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Types of weather Radar Bands:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Varying frequencies <\/span><b>like S-band, C-band and X-band<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 are commonly used by the IMD in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Applications of\u00a0 Doppler weather Radars\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is used to track the movement of <\/span><b>weather systems and cloud bands,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gauge rainfall over its coverage area of about 500 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>X-band radar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to <\/span><b>detect thunderstorms and lightning,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whereas a C-band radar helps in <\/span><b>cyclone tracking.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/by-overriding-rti-act-new-law-triggers-transparency-concerns-10429496\/?ref=infinite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doppler Weather Radar is a specialized radar that uses the Doppler effect to produce velocity data about objects at a distance.
