


{"id":48287,"date":"2025-05-26T17:19:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T11:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=48287"},"modified":"2025-10-14T12:06:59","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:36:59","slug":"bharat-forecasting-system-bfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bharat-forecasting-system-bfs\/","title":{"rendered":"Bharat Forecasting System (BFS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Bharat Forecasting System Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will soon adopt the Bharat Forecast System (BFS), which offers the highest resolution among weather models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>About Bharat Forecasting System\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0<strong>indigenously built advanced weather forecasting system.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was developed by the\u00a0<strong>Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will provide\u00a0<strong>forecasts with a 6 km resolution\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 the<strong>\u00a0highest in the world\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 that would allow forecasters to predict small-scale weather features more accurately.<\/li>\n<li>This resolution is advanced in comparison to the previous 12-km Global Forecast System (GFS) used in India so far.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This<strong>\u00a0finer resolution<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>help in more precise predictions of localised weather events\u00a0<\/strong>like heavy rainfall and cyclones.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>powered by the Arka supercomputer.<\/strong>\u00a0This supercomputer has 11.77 petaflops (a unit to measure computer processing speed) and 33 petabytes (a petabyte is 1,000 terabytes (TB)) of storage.\n<ul>\n<li>The supercomputer is\u00a0<strong>located at IITM<\/strong>, Pune, and will massively\u00a0<strong>reduce forecasting time compared to the older Pratyush<\/strong>\u00a0supercomputer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data from a network of 40 Doppler Weather Radars\u00a0<\/strong>from across the countrywill be\u00a0<strong>used to run the BFS<\/strong>\u00a0model that would enable the weather office to\u00a0<strong>issue more localised forecasts as well as nowcasts<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>weather forecasts for the next two hours.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gradually<\/strong>, the number of\u00a0<strong>Doppler radars will increase to 100<\/strong>, which would allow the weather office to issue nowcasts across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The BFS can\u00a0<strong>provide 6 km resolution forecasts<\/strong>\u00a0for the tropical region that falls\u00a0<strong>between 30 degrees South and 30 degrees North Latitudes<\/strong>.
