Khangchendzonga (also known as Kanchenjunga) is the\u00a0<strong>highest peak in India<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>third-highest peak in the world<\/strong>\u00a0after Mount Everest (Chomolongma) in Nepal and K2 in Pakistan.<\/li>\n<li>It is situated in the\u00a0<strong>eastern Himalayas<\/strong>\u00a0on the<strong>\u00a0border between Sikkim<\/strong>\u00a0state, northeastern India,\u00a0<strong>and eastern Nepal<\/strong>, 74 km north-<strong>northwest of Darjeeling, Sikkim.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has an elevation of 28,169 feet\u00a0<strong>(8,586 metres).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is part of the\u00a0<strong>Great Himalaya Range.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The name Khangchendzonga has been variously translated as \u201cFive Treasuries (or Strongboxes) of the Great Snow\u201d or \u201c<strong>Great Five-Peaked Fortress of Snow.\u201d<\/strong>, a\u00a0<strong>reference to its five separate summits.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Kanchenjunga\u00a0<strong>has four ridges\u00a0<\/strong>extending north, east, south, and west.\u00a0<strong>Between them are four glaciers:<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Zemu\u00a0<\/strong>(northeast), the\u00a0<strong>Talung\u00a0<\/strong>(southeast), the\u00a0<strong>Yalung\u00a0<\/strong>(southwest), and the\u00a0<strong>Kanchenjunga\u00a0<\/strong>(northwest).<\/li>\n<li>The mountain and its glaciers\u00a0<strong>receive heavy snow during the summer monsoon<\/strong>\u00a0season and a\u00a0<strong>lighter snowfall during the winter.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To the east,\u00a0<strong>Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim\u00a0<\/strong>is a mountain wilderness with a wide variety of animal species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charles Evans in 1955<\/strong>\u00a0led a British expedition up the southwest face in the\u00a0<strong>first successful ascent<\/strong>\u00a0of Kanchenjunga.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mt.
