{"id":49245,"date":"2026-02-12T11:20:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T05:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=49245"},"modified":"2026-02-12T15:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T09:58:17","slug":"lysosomal-storage-disorders-lsds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lysosomal-storage-disorders-lsds\/","title":{"rendered":"Lysosomal Storage Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Lysosomal Storage Disorders Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from medical and research institutions across six states and two union territories have compiled the first government-supported national biobank of a sub-section of rare diseases called Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Lysosomal Storage Disorders<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lysosomal storage diseases or disorders (LSDs) are <\/span><b>rare genetic conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cause a <\/span><b>buildup of toxic materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your body\u2019s cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: Gaucher, Pompe, Fabry, MPS I, MPS II, mucopolysaccharidoses, mucolipidoses, oligosaccharidoses, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSDs cause a <\/span><b>buildup of toxic materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the body\u2019s cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of the LSDs are <\/span><b>caused by mutations in the genes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encoding a <\/span><b>lysosomal enzyme.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lysosome is a <\/span><b>membrane-bound cell organelle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contains digestive enzymes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lysosomes are involved with various cell processes. They <\/span><b>break down excess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or worn-out cell parts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><b>LSDs lack certain enzymesor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a substance <\/span><b>that helps the enzyme work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (enzyme activator or modifier). Enzymes assist your cells\u2019 lysosomes with metabolism.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without functioning enzymes, your body can\u2019t break down fats, sugars and other substances.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If those build up in <\/span><b>your body, they can be harmful<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They cause dysfunction of those organs where they accumulate and contribute to great morbidity and mortality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All LSDs except Hunter syndrome (MPS II) and Fabry disease are autosomal recessive disorders.
