


{"id":49453,"date":"2025-06-06T14:38:07","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T09:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=49453"},"modified":"2025-06-06T15:51:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T10:21:44","slug":"grand-inga-hydropower-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/grand-inga-hydropower-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand Inga Hydropower Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Grand Inga Hydropower Project Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The World Bank has approved $250 million in financing for the Inga 3 hydropower project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite widespread opposition from civil society groups and longstanding governance concerns.<\/p>\n<h2>About Grand Inga Hydropower Project<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a hydroelectric project on the\u00a0<strong>Congo River<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>world\u2019s largest proposed hydropower scheme<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>50 km upstream\u00a0<\/strong>of the\u00a0<strong>mouth of the Congo River into the Atlantic Ocean,<\/strong>\u00a0and 225 km (140 miles) south west of Kinshasa on the Congo River.<\/li>\n<li>The site is characterized by particularly\u00a0<strong>high average river flows<\/strong>\u00a0(the\u00a0<strong>second largest in the world after the Amazon<\/strong>), a natural drop of around 97 meters caused by rapids, and a bend in the river that makes a variety of lower-impact designs possible.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project could produce up to\u00a0<strong>40,000 megawatts (MW)\u00a0<\/strong>of electricity, more than<strong>\u00a0twice the power generated by\u00a0<\/strong>the current most powerful dam in the world\u2014the\u00a0<strong>Three Gorges Dam in China<\/strong>\u2014and\u00a0<strong>more than a third of the electricity<\/strong>\u00a0currently\u00a0<strong>produced in all of Africa.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The project will cost an estimated $80 billion US dollars, with\u00a0<strong>f<\/strong>unding provided by the World Bank, African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, French Development Agency and Development Bank of South Africa.<\/li>\n<li>It would be developed in\u00a0<strong>seven phases beginning with Inga 3,\u00a0<\/strong>which itself would have two phases.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Inga 3 dam<\/strong>\u00a0will be located\u00a0<strong>on the largest waterfall in the world by volume, Inga Falls.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Inga Falls is already incorporated into the\u00a0<strong>Inga 1 (351 MW) and Inga 2 (1,424 MW)<\/strong>\u00a0hydroelectric facilities,\u00a0<strong>commissioned in 1972 and 1982<\/strong>, respectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inga 3<\/strong>\u00a0is projected to cost US$14 billion and to generate\u00a0<strong>4,800 MW<\/strong>\u00a0when completed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grand Inga Hydropower Project FAQs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q1<\/strong>.
