{"id":49539,"date":"2026-06-17T13:18:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T07:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=49539"},"modified":"2026-06-18T13:30:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T08:00:25","slug":"powai-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/powai-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Powai Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Powai Lake Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BMC recently proposed appointing infrastructure consultancy firm AECOM Asia Company Limited to prepare a comprehensive redevelopment plan for a stretch of Powai Lake along Adi Shankaracharya Marg at a consultancy cost of Rs 1.85 crore.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Powai Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>artificial lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situated in the <\/span><b>northern suburb of Mumbai, Maharashtra.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake was <\/span><b>built <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>British in 1890<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after<\/span><b> constructing two dams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between two hillocks <\/span><b>across Mithi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to augment the <\/span><b>water supply to Bombay.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>hillocks seen on the south<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> end of the lake are the <\/span><b>lowest slopes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Ghats.<\/a><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catchment area of the lake is 6.6 sq.km., with the depth varying from 3 to 12 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Around Powai Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two famed institutions-<\/span><b>Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Padmavati Devi Temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, situated on the bank of the lake <\/span><b>inside IIT Bombay campus dates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back to the <\/span><b>10th century AD.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is <\/span><b>surrounded by the Powai Bird Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an important resting, feeding, and breeding site of several<\/span><b> bird species, resident and migratory.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among some of the lake\u2019s rare and distinguished residents and visitors are the <\/span><b>Watercock, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Slaty-legged Crake,<\/b> <b>Ruddy-breasted Crake, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woolly-necked Stork, Caspian Tern, and Peregrine Falcon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also home to a small population of the <\/span><b>marsh crocodile.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been extensively used for fishing over the years.
