{"id":50622,"date":"2025-06-17T12:21:36","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T06:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=50622"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:27:20","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T08:57:20","slug":"what-is-rinderpest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-rinderpest\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Rinderpest?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Rinderpest Latest News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has secured a prestigious position in global animal health with the designation of the ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal as a Category A Rinderpest Holding Facility (RHF).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rinderpest<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>cattle plague,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>contagious viral disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affecting <\/span><b>clovenhoofed animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mainly <\/span><b>cattle and buffalo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by a virus of the <\/span><b>Paramyxoviridae family, genus Morbillivirus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many species of <\/span><b>wild and domestic cloven-hoofed animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including sheep and goats) show only mild symptoms of the disease when infected, but for cattle and buffalo, mortality rates can reach up to 100 per cent in highly susceptible herds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other than cattle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and buffalo, rinderpest can infect <\/span><b>zebus, water buffaloes, African buffaloes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, eland, kudu, wildebeest, various antelopes, bushpigs, <\/span><b>warthogs, giraffes.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Transmission of Rinderpest<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is spread <\/span><b>by effective contact between animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carrying the virus and susceptible animals. The virus is found in nasal secretions a few days before any clinical signs appear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the disease progresses the virus is found in most body fluids and either death ensues, or the animal recovers, develops immunity and clears the virus from the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Rinderpest<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cattle, signs of the disease include <\/span><b>fever, erosive lesions in the mouth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, discharge from the nose and eyes, profuse diarrhoea and dehydration, often leading to death within 10 to 15 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other species rinderpest may show milder clinical signs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no public health risk, since rinderpest <\/span><b>does not affect people.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It historically <\/span><b>occurred <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>Europe, Africa and Asia.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011 this disease <\/span><b>was<\/b> <b>officially eradicated.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Designation of Rinderpest Holding Facility<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is given by the <\/span><b>World Organisation for Animal Health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WOAH) and the <\/span><b>United Nations\u2019 Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent its re-emergence, WOAH and FAO restrict the storage of <\/span><b>Rinderpest Virus-Containing Material (RVCM) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a select few high-security laboratories worldwide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICAR-NIHSAD, a Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) facility and WOAH reference laboratory for avian influenza, was designated as India\u2019s RVCM repository in 2012.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a rigorous evaluation the institute earned <\/span><b>Category A RHF status for one year.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This recognition places India among a <\/span><b>distinguished group of only six facilities<\/b> <b>worldwide <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entrusted with the critical responsibility of securely holding rinderpest virus material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2136651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>PIB<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rinderpest, also known as cattle plague, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, causing severe economic losses.
