{"id":5064,"date":"2023-01-13T03:28:45","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T21:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5064"},"modified":"2025-03-27T04:03:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T22:33:56","slug":"duchenne-muscular-dystrophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/duchenne-muscular-dystrophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the most common and fatal type of muscular dystrophy marked by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to alterations of a protein called <strong>\u201cdystrophin<\/strong>\u201d that helps keep muscle cells intact.<\/li>\n<li>Patients (usually children) have <strong>reduced bone density<\/strong> and an increased risk of developing fractures.<\/li>\n<li>India has over 5 lakh patients in the country suffering from DMD and the condition is predominantly <strong>seen in boys<\/strong>, but in rare cases, it can also affect girls.<\/li>\n<li>It can begin as early as age 2 or 3, first affecting the proximal muscles (those close to the core of the body) and later affecting the distal limb muscles (those close to the extremities).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\u00a0 Enlargement of calves, a waddling gait, and lumbar lordosis (an inward curve of the spine)<\/li>\n<li>The current therapeutic options available to treat DMD are minimal and highly expensive treatment and are mostly imported from abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a genetic disorder?<\/h3>\n<p>A genetic disorder is a disease caused in whole or in part by a change in the DNA sequence away from the normal sequence.
