At <\/span><b>age 18 he became a sailor on the North Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While ashore, he studied mathematics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1755 Cook joined the <\/span><b>British Royal Navy. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was promoted quickly and <strong>t<\/strong><\/span><b>ook command of a ship at age 29.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>took part in several battles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in what is now Canada <\/span><b>during the French and Indian War.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the war he charted the coast of Newfoundland.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>sailed the seaways and coasts of Canada <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1759 and 1763\u201367) and <\/span><b>conducted three expeditions to the Pacific Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1768\u201371, 1772\u201375, and1776\u201379), ranging from the Antarctic ice fields to the Bering Strait and from the coasts of North America to Australia and New Zealand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1766 he <\/span><b>wrote a paper about an eclipse of the Sun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that won him fame as a s<\/span><b>cientific observer.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Three Voyages of Discovery:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The First Voyage:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In 1768<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Royal Society of London, an organization of scientists, asked Cook to lead the <\/span><b>first scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook\u2019s expedition <\/span><b>charted New Zealand.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It <\/span><b>also reached the southeastern coast of Australia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1770.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Cook named the continent New South Wales <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>claimed it for Great Britain.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He r<\/span><b>eturned to England the following year.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Second Voyage:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between <\/span><b>1772 and 1775,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cook <\/span><b>went around the world from west to east, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeking to discover another southern continent.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook <\/span><b>did not reach Antarctica,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but he did <\/span><b>become the first European to cross the Antarctic Circle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
