{"id":51033,"date":"2026-01-25T14:01:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T08:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=51033"},"modified":"2026-02-07T08:10:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T02:40:48","slug":"agarwood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/agarwood\/","title":{"rendered":"Agarwood"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Agarwood Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region laid the foundation stone for the \u20b980 crore Agarwood Value Chain Development Scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Agarwood<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquilaria malaccensis, commonly known as agarwood, is a species of tree belonging to the <\/span><b>Thymelaeaceae family.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>Oud, Gaharu or Agar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prized as the world\u2019s most valuable incense.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>resin is produced as a defence mechanism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the intense stress suffered by the trees when they are infected by a type of <\/span><b>mold belonging to the Phaeoacremonium species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Phialophora parasitica).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aquilaria tree is a <\/span><b>fast-growing, subtropical forest tree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is mainly found in <\/span><b>South Asia\u2019s Himalayan foothills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, throughout Southeast Asia, and into the rainforests of Papua New Guinea.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, it grows in the <\/span><b>wild in the Northeast,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially in Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soil:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aquilaria can <\/span><b>grow on a wide range of soils<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including poor sandy soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Applications of Agarwood: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resinous wood is used as <\/span><b>incense, for medicinal purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pure resin in distilled form is used as <\/span><b>an essential oil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as a perfume component.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Characteristics of Agarwood<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It grows at elevations from a few meters above sea level to about 1000 meters, with approx. 500 meters being most ideal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Seedlings require<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>great deal of shade and water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but will grow rapidly, producing flowers and <\/span><b>seeds as early as four years old.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wild, it takes nearly a <\/span><b>decade for a tree to mature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2218232&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agarwood is prized for its aromatic resinous wood, formed in Aquilaria trees, and is widely used in perfumes, incense, and traditional medicines.
