


{"id":5104,"date":"2022-12-01T04:55:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T23:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5104"},"modified":"2025-03-27T04:17:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T22:47:56","slug":"sc-hearing-on-maharashtra-karnataka-border-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sc-hearing-on-maharashtra-karnataka-border-dispute\/","title":{"rendered":"SC hearing on Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What is Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Dispute?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka over Belgaum and other border areas is a longstanding issue between the two states.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin of the dispute:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The erstwhile Bombay Presidency, a multilingual province, included the present-day Karnataka districts of Bijapur, Belgaum, Dharwar and Uttara-Kannada (previously North Kanara).<\/li>\n<li>The Belagavi\/Belgaum region at the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka comprises both Kannada and Marathi speakers.<\/li>\n<li>In 1948, the Belgaum municipality requested that the district, having a predominantly Marathi-speaking population, be incorporated into the proposed Maharashtra state.<\/li>\n<li>However, the <strong>States Reorganisation Act of 1956<\/strong>, which divided states on linguistic and administrative lines, made Belgaum a part of the then Mysore State (which was renamed Karnataka in 1973).<\/li>\n<li>The area has been under dispute since then.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti<\/strong>, formed in 1948, has been fighting for a merger of 800-odd villages in Karnataka with Maharashtra.<\/li>\n<li>From 2006, Karnataka started holding the <strong>winter session of the Legislature in Belagavi, building a massive Secretariat building in the district headquarters<\/strong> on the lines of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to reassert its claim.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mahajan Commission:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1966, at Maharashtra\u2019s insistence, then <strong>Prime Minister Indira Gandhi established a one-man commission led by Mehr Chand Mahajan<\/strong>, third Chief Justice of India.<\/li>\n<li>The Commission, which submitted its report in 1967, recommended that 264 villages be transferred to Maharashtra and that Belgaum and 247 villages remain with Karnataka.<\/li>\n<li>The Commission also additionally stated that Sholapur in Maharashtra and Kasaragode, which is in Kerala, be given to Karnataka.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four-member committee:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1960, a four-member committee was formed by both States, but it couldn\u2019t arrive at a consensus and representatives submitted reports to their respective governments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) Which states share border line with Karnataka?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Karnataka is bordered by the states of Goa and Maharashtra to the north, Telangana to the east, Tamil Nadu to the southeast and Kerala to the south.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/maharashtra-karnataka-dispute-belagavi-controversy-hath-bommai-bjp-supreme-court-hearing\/article66204244.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><u>The Hindu<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Border dispute between Maharashtra &#038;
