{"id":51154,"date":"2025-06-21T14:38:28","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T09:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=51154"},"modified":"2025-06-21T15:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T10:25:10","slug":"rice-yellow-mottle-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rice-yellow-mottle-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Rice Yellow Mottle Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Rice Yellow Mottle Virus Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent genomic study revealed the outbreak of Rice Yellow Mottle Virus (RYMV) disease across African rice ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rice Yellow Mottle Virus<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It emerged in the middle of the <\/span><b>1800s in the Eastern Arc Mountains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a biodiversity hotspot, now part of Tanzania.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a pathogen that <\/span><b>infects rice and a few related grass species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that poses a major threat to rice production in Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>endemic and largely restricted to the African continent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it has been found in most of the rice-growing countries.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This virus is a <\/span><b>member of the genus Sobemovirus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a <\/span><b>high genetic variability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thus can evolve rapidly, which means that it can overcome resistance genes in the rice plant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Transmission of Rice Yellow Mottle Virus<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is transmitted by <\/span><b>several species of beetles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most of which belong to the genus Chrysomelidae.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also transmitted by <\/span><b>grasshoppers,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Conocephalus merumontanus and Oxya spp., cows, rats, and donkeys.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus can also been <\/span><b>found on roots of infected plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can infect plants through injured roots.
