{"id":51328,"date":"2026-02-21T11:51:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T06:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=51328"},"modified":"2026-02-21T15:02:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T09:32:25","slug":"ottawa-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ottawa-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Ottawa Convention Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poland&#8217;s withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, as announced by the Prime Minister recently, is a strategic maneuver that allows the country to deploy anti-personnel mines swiftly along its eastern borders if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Ottawa Convention<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ottawa Convention, also referred to as the &#8220;<\/span><b>Mine Ban Treaty,&#8221; prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of anti-personnel landmines (APLs).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>requires states-parties <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>destroy their stockpiled APLs within four years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>eliminate all APL holdings, including mines currently planted in the soil, within 10 years.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Countries may request a renewable extension, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which can be <\/span><b>up to 10 years long<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to fulfill their destruction obligations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">States-parties are also required <\/span><b>annually to report their total APL stockpiles,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>technical characteristics of their APLs, the location <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of all mined areas, and the <\/span><b>status <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><b>APL destruction programs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The convention, which is of unlimited duration and open to all nations, <\/span><b>entered into force on March 1, 1999.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Treaty has <\/span><b>164 States Partie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, including 34 out of the 50 States that produced mines before 1997, and 33 Signatories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, six major countries <\/span><b>remain outside<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Convention: <\/span><b>China, India, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and United States.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>States Party to the Ottawa Treaty commit to<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Never use APLs, nor \u201cdevelop, produce, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">otherwise acquire, <\/span><b>stockpile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, retain, or transfer\u201d them;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Clear mined areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their territory <\/span><b>within 10 years;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In mine-affected countries, conduct mine risk education <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and ensure that <\/span><b>mine survivors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their families, and communities receive <\/span><b>comprehensive assistance;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Offer assistance to other States Parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, in providing for survivors or contributing to clearance programs;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Adopt national implementation measures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as national legislation) in order to ensure that the terms of the treaty are upheld in their territory.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devdiscourse.com\/article\/health\/3810525-polands-exit-from-ottawa-convention-border-security-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DEVD<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ottawa Convention prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of anti-personnel landmines (APLs).
