


{"id":5136,"date":"2022-12-01T03:36:02","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T22:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5136"},"modified":"2025-03-27T04:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T22:59:17","slug":"manipur-sangai-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/manipur-sangai-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Manipur Sangai Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Manipur Sangai Festival:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Every year the State of Manipur celebrates the \u201cManipur Sangai Festival\u201d from 21st to 30th November.<\/li>\n<li>The objective is to showcase Manipur as a world class tourism destination.<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018Festival\u2019 is named after the <strong>State animal, Sangai<\/strong>, the brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur.<\/li>\n<li>It started in the year <strong>2010<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The theme of this year\u2019s Sangai festival is <strong>\u201cFestival of oneness\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Every edition of the festival showcases the tourism potential of the state in the field of Arts &amp; Culture, Handloom, Handicrafts, Indigenous Sports, Cuisine and Music of the state etc.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sangai Deer:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scientific Name: <\/strong>Rucervus eldii.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Common Name: <\/strong>Sangai, Brow antlered deer, Dancing Deer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Population:<\/strong> About 260 (acc. to a joint census conducted by the Forest Department in 2016).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat and Distribution:<\/strong> It is found only in <strong>Keibul Lamjao National Park<\/strong> \u2013 the largest single mass of phumdi is in the Loktak Lake \u2013 in Manipur\u2019s Bishnupur district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sangai is a medium-sized deer, with uniquely distinctive antlers, with extremely long brow tine, which form the main beam.<\/li>\n<li>The forward protruding beam appears to come out from the eyebrow, hence called the brow-antlered deer.<\/li>\n<li>It has a dark reddish-brown winter coat, which turns paler in summer.<\/li>\n<li>The deer walks on the hind surface of its pasterns with mincing hops over floating foliage, and is hence also called the<strong> Dancing Deer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Status:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>State animal of <strong>Manipur<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule-1 of <strong>Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Endangered on IUCN Red List.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conservation Issues:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sangai faces threat from steadily degenerating habitat of phumdi as a result of continuous inundation and flooding caused due to artificial reservoir.<\/li>\n<li>There is also invasion of non-native plants like <strong>Paragrass.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It also faces threats of diseases from the livestock, inbreeding depression and poaching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What is the old name of Manipur?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Manipur was earliar known by different names such as Mitei-Leipak, Sanna-Leipak, Poirei-Lam, and Tilli-Koktong.
