{"id":5180,"date":"2022-12-02T01:34:10","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T20:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5180"},"modified":"2025-03-27T04:45:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T23:15:23","slug":"india-to-assume-chairmanship-of-wassenaar-arrangement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/india-to-assume-chairmanship-of-wassenaar-arrangement\/","title":{"rendered":"India to assume chairmanship of Wassenaar Arrangement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What is Wassenaar Arrangement?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Wassenaar Arrangement has been established in order to contribute to regional and international security and stability, by promoting transparency and greater responsibility in transfers of conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies, thus preventing destabilising accumulations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The body came into being in 1996<\/strong> to succeed the Cold War-era <strong>Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The name comes from <strong>Wassenaar, a suburb of The Hague,<\/strong> where the agreement to start such a multi-lateral cooperation was reached in 1995.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Members: 42<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India: India joined the Wassenaar Arrangement in December 2017<\/strong> as its 42nd participating state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Arrangement is based on five crucial principles:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It contributes to regional and international security and stability.<\/li>\n<li>It promotes transparency and greater responsibility in transfers of conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies.<\/li>\n<li>It complements and reinforces the export control regimes for weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.<\/li>\n<li>It is not directed against any state or group of states.<\/li>\n<li>It uses export controls as a means to combat terrorism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What does the Wassenaar Arrangement cover?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) is the first global, multilateral arrangement covering both conventional weapons and sensitive dual-use goods and technologies.
