They don\u2019t all work exactly the same way, so different types of chemo might be used <\/span><b>for different types of cancer.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Most are given as an infusion into a vein (IV)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><b>some are given as an injection,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taken as <\/span><b>pills, or applied to the skin.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How is Chemo Different from Other Cancer treatments?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemo is a s<\/span><b>ystemic treatment.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>travels through the bloodstream <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>reach all parts of your body.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can <\/span><b>kill cancer cells that have spread<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (metastasized) to parts of the body far <\/span><b>away from the original<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (primary) <\/span><b>tumor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or cancer cells in blood cancers, such as leukemia, that have spread throughout the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes chemo <\/span><b>different from local treatments like surgery and radiation, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which only affect one part of the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How Does Chemotherapy Work?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemotherapy works by<\/span><b> affecting cell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s <\/span><b>when they are growing and dividing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make new cells. During this <\/span><b>process (called the cell cycle)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>cells:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grow in size.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make copies of their genetic material (DNA).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divide to form new cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Some cells,<\/b> <b>such as skin cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are <\/span><b>fast-growing, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning they move through this process quickly. Other cells, such as muscle cells, complete it more slowly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Cancer cells tend to be faster growing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, moving through the <\/span><b>cell cycle very quickly.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Different types of chemo target cells at different phases <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the cell cycle.
