discovered a new flowering plant \u201cBegonia nyishiorum\u201d, endemic to the state\u2019s East Kameng district.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Begonia nyishiorum<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a new species of <\/span><b>flowering plant.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>endemic to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It grows in <\/span><b>moist, shaded mountain slopes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,500 and 3,000 metres above sea level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is instantly recognisable by the dense crimson, fringed scales that sheath its light green petioles-an indumentum <\/span><b>previously unseen in any Asian begonia.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently known only from two forest sites in East Kameng, the <\/span><b>species\u2019 petiole \u201cfringe\u201d sets it apart from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over <\/span><b>2,150 accepted begonias worldwide.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The epithet nyishiorum honours the Nyishi community <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose traditional stewardship protects these high-elevation forests. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">The species is assessed as <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Data Deficient <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to
