


{"id":5272,"date":"2022-12-30T11:30:36","date_gmt":"2022-12-30T06:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5272"},"modified":"2025-03-27T05:18:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T23:48:54","slug":"congress-celebrates-its-138th-foundation-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/congress-celebrates-its-138th-foundation-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress celebrates its 138th foundation day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>How the Congress was founded?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The English bureaucrat <strong>Allan Octavian Hume or AO Hume is credited as the founder of the organisation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On December 28, 1885, 72 social reformers, journalists and lawyers congregated for the <strong>first session of the INC at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At that point, the aim of this group was not to demand independence from the ongoing colonial rule but to influence the policies of the British government in favour of Indians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Transformation towards the demand for independence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the next few years, the party\u2019s work continued, to shift the colonial administrators\u2019 attitudes and policies on the rights and powers allowed to Indians.<\/li>\n<li>The party largely consisted of educated, upper-class people who were likely to have studied abroad. But with time, this <strong>grouping became more diverse, as the organisation began setting up provincial organisations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>At its Eleventh Session in 1895<\/strong>, there was an increase in the number of delegates from 1,163 the previous year to 1,584. <strong>President Surendranath Banerjea<\/strong> congratulated the Congress for bringing together \u201cthe scattered element of a vast and diversified population.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Splits and reconvening<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In Surat in 1906,<\/strong> the divisions between the \u2018moderates\u2019 led by Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Surendranath Banerjea, and the \u2018extremists\u2019 led by Bal Gangadhar Tilak came to the fore and there was a split.
