recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Animal Discoveries and Plant Discoveries 2024<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Zoological Survey of India (ZSI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the country\u2019s premier institution for faunal exploration and research, <\/span><b>publishes Animal Discoveries every year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailing the new discoveries of fauna.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the <\/span><b>Botanical Survey of India (BSI),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the country\u2019s premier organisation for plant research and taxonomy, <\/span><b>publishes Plant Discoveries every year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailing the new discoveries of flora.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Highlights of <\/b><b>Animal Discoveries and Plant Discoveries 2024<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India added <\/span><b>683 new species to its fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the year 2024, which included 459 new species and 224 species new records.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country also <\/span><b>added 433 taxa of flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the same period, which included 410 species and 23 infra-specific taxa of plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>maximum number of new discoveries of fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2024 was recorded <\/span><b>from Kerala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014with 101 species (80 new species and 21 new records)\u2014<\/span><b>followed by Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201482 (68 new species and 14 new records). <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu recorded 63 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discoveries, with 50 new species and 13 new records.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In the eastern and northeastern parts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the country, <\/span><b>Arunachal Pradesh recorded 72 animal discoveries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (42 new species and 30 new records), <\/span><b>Meghalaya 42 new discoverie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s (25 new species and 17 new records), and <\/span><b>West Bengal 56 new discoveries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (25 new species and 31 new records).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Andaman and Nicobar Islands,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another biological hotspot in the country, recorded <\/span><b>43 new discoveries of fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the region, which included 14 new discoveries of fauna and 29 new records.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The significant faunal discoveries for the year 2024 <\/span><b>include two new genus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>37 species of reptiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>five new species of amphibians.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The significant discovery of r<\/span><b>eptiles included Dravidoseps gouensis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, belonging to the <\/span><b>new genus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Anguiculus dicaprioi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a member of the <\/span><b>Colubridae family, named after Hollywood star, Leonardo Di Caprio.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In terms of plant discoveries,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>highest number of flora <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discovered was from <\/span><b>Kerala (58), followed by Maharashtra (45) and Uttarakhand (40).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new plant discoveries for 2024 <\/span><b>record 154 angiosperms, 4 pteridophytes, 15 bryophytes, 63 lichens, 156 fungi, 32 algae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>9 microbes.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hotspot regions, such as the <\/span><b>Western Ghats <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>North-Eastern regions, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have contributed <\/span><b>35% of total discoveries.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant discoveries for the year 2024 <\/span><b>include wild relatives of <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many potential <\/span><b>horticultural, agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as begonia, impatiens (balsams), legumes, zingibers, orchids, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of flora, the significant discoveries <\/span><b>include important orchid species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><b>Bulbophyllum gopalianum, Coelogyne tripurensis, Gastrodia indica,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Gastrodia sikkimensis. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Several new species belonging to important plant
