style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union government recently ordered the fast-tracking of the launch of 52 dedicated surveillance satellites under the SBS-III programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Space-Based Surveillance-III Programme\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>approved in October 2023,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security to<\/span><b> develop next-generation satellites over the next decade.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involves the construction and launch of <\/span><b>21 satellites by India\u2019s space agency,<\/b> <b>ISRO, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>31 by three private companies.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>first satellite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected <\/span><b>to be launched by April 2026,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the <\/span><b>full constellation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeted for completion <\/span><b>by the end of 2029.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>aim <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of SBS-3 is to<\/span><b> cover much larger areas of China and Pakistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the <\/span><b>Indian Ocean Region,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>shorter revisit times<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (interval between two consecutive surveillance sweeps of the same location) and <\/span><b>much better resolution.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>space doctrine is also being fine-tuned.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It enables the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force to <\/span><b>monitor adversary movements deep inside hostile territory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 including airfields, bases, and staging areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><b>new satellites will utilise AI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and will be able to <\/span><b>interact with each other <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and thus gather GeoIntelligence more effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A crucial aspect of the project is the <\/span><b>planned transfer of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology from ISRO to private players,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which will allow for rapid satellite launches during emergencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>satellites will operate in both low Earth and geostationary orbits,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providing comprehensive coverage and countering China&#8217;s advanced anti-satellite capabilities, including kinetic and electronic warfare systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project cost of SBS-III is pegged at \u20b926,968 crore.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Defence Space Agency (DSA),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which functions <\/span><b>under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of the Ministry of Defence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is <\/span><b>leading the project.<\/b>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Formed in 2019, the DSA<\/b> <b>replaced the Integrated Space Cell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>now oversees India\u2019s military space operations. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">It <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">coordinates with ISRO, DRDO, and the armed forces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop space warfare strategies and safeguard national space
