


{"id":5308,"date":"2023-03-16T01:10:04","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T19:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5308"},"modified":"2025-03-27T05:33:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T00:03:20","slug":"what-is-mcmahon-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-mcmahon-line\/","title":{"rendered":"What is McMahon Line?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About McMahon Line:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>geographical border<\/strong> between <strong>Northeast India and Tibet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>boundary between China and India<\/strong>, although its legal status is <strong>disputed by the Chinese<\/strong> government.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>negotiated between Tibet and Great Britain<\/strong> at the end of the <strong>Shimla Conference in 1914<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>named after Henry McMahon<\/strong>, who was the foreign secretary of British India and the <strong>chief negotiator of the convention <\/strong>at Simla.<\/li>\n<li>The length of this boundary is <strong>890 kilometers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>runs from the eastern border of Bhutan<\/strong> <strong>along the crest of the Himalayas<\/strong> until it <strong>reaches<\/strong> the <strong>great bend in the Brahmaputra<\/strong> <strong>River<\/strong>, where that river emerges from its Tibetan course into the Assam Valley.<\/li>\n<li>Though <strong>India considers the McMahon Line as the legal national border<\/strong>, <strong>China rejects it<\/strong>, contending that Tibet was not a sovereign state and therefore did not have the power to conclude treaties.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is The Shimla Treaty of 1914?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It was signed in 1914 by <strong>delegates from India and Tibet<\/strong> to establish a clear demarcation between the two countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>China was not present in this treaty<\/strong> since Tibet was an autonomous region at the time.<\/li>\n<li>According to the treaty the <strong>McMahon Line is the clear boundary line between India and China.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The British rulers, on behalf of India, considered Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and the southern portion of Tibet to be part of India, which the Tibetans consented to.<\/li>\n<li>As a result, <strong>Arunachal Pradesh&#8217;s Tawang region became a part of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is LAC?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>LAC is a <strong>demarcation line that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India considers the LAC to be 3,488 km long<\/strong>, while the <strong>Chinese<\/strong> consider it to be only <strong>around 2,000 km.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is currently the <strong>de-facto border between the two countries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Line of Actual Control (LAC), is <strong>divided into three sectors:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Western<\/strong> (Ladakh, Kashmir),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Middle<\/strong> (Uttarakhand, Himachal) and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eastern<\/strong> (Sikkim, Arunachal): Here, the alignment of the LAC is <strong>along the McMahon Line.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is Line of Control (LoC)?<\/h3>\n<p>(LoC) is a geographical line lying between India and Pakistan\u2019s controlled parts of the former (under the British) Jammu and Kashmir and controlled by the army.
