{"id":5316,"date":"2023-03-16T02:05:10","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T20:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5316"},"modified":"2025-03-27T05:36:27","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T00:06:27","slug":"wild-ass-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wild-ass-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Ass Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Wild Ass Sanctuary:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located in the <strong>Little Rann of Kutch<\/strong> of the <strong>Gujarat<\/strong> State in India.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>only place where the Indian wild ass,<\/strong> locally called Khacchar, <strong>is found<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The sanctuary is home to a sizeable population of <strong>Rabari and Bharwad tribes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Topology<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It can be considered a large <strong>ecotone<\/strong>, a transitional area between marine and terrestrial ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li>It is a continuum of a <strong>dry area of dark silt<\/strong> with <strong>salt encrustation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is dotted with about <strong>74 elevated plateaus<\/strong> or <strong>islands<\/strong>, locally called <strong>&#8216;bets&#8217;<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>During the <strong>monsoon<\/strong>, <strong>large parts are flooded<\/strong> to depths of up to 2m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>full of dry thorny scrub,<\/strong> and there are <strong>no large trees<\/strong> <strong>except on the fringes<\/strong> and bets.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the plants and trees that are found in this sanctuary are <strong>Morad, Unt morad<\/strong>, Theg, Dolari, Khijdo, Kerdo, Mithi jar, Kheri pilu, Akado, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Besides Indian Wild Ass, the other mammals found here include <strong>Blackbuck, Nilgai, Bluebull,<\/strong> Hare, Wolf, Foxes, <strong>Desert C<\/strong>at, Indian fox, <strong>Jackal<\/strong>, <strong>Hyena<\/strong>, Wild boar, etc.<\/li>\n<li>There is rich birdlife, including the <strong>Houbara bustard<\/strong>, <strong>Sandgrouse<\/strong>, <strong>Pale harrier, Black-shouldered kite,<\/strong> Pelican, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key Facts about Indian Wild Ass:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>sub-species of Asian Wild Ass<\/strong>, i.e., Equus hemionus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name: <\/strong><i><strong>Equus hemionus khur<\/strong><\/i><\/li>\n<li>It is characterized by <strong>distinctive white markings<\/strong> on the anterior part of the rump and on the posterior part of the shoulder and a <strong>stripe down the back that is bordered by white<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution<\/strong>: <strong>World\u2019s last population<\/strong> of Indian WildAss is restricted to <strong>Rann of Kachchh<\/strong>, <strong>Gujarat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat<\/strong>: <strong>Desert and grassland ecosystems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation Status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN: Near threatened<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES: Appendix II<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife Protection Act (1972): Schedule-I<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0Where is Rann of Kutch located ?<\/h3>\n<p>The Rann of Kachchh is a salt marshy land in the Thar Desert in the Kachchh district of western Gujarat.
