On World Meditation Day, this article is going to look in to the history, importance and activities of World Meditation Day 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What is Meditation?<\/h2>\n<p>Meditation is a practice that is very ancient in nature and includes focusing our attention on quieting our mind. There are multiple ways to practice meditation techniques. However, the main goal remains managing our mental and emotional being. Meditation is the only way that can help us connect with our inner selves, channelise our thoughts and manage our emotions. Meditation can be practiced for several reasons:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reducing stress and anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Improving focus and concentration<\/li>\n<li>Boosting mood and well-being<\/li>\n<li>Promoting better sleep<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>World Meditation Day Origin<\/h2>\n<p>On December 6, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially declared December 21 as World Meditation Day through a unanimously adopted resolution.<\/p>\n<p>India, along with Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mexico, and Andorra, played a leading role as part of the core group that guided the adoption of the resolution titled\u00a0<i>World Meditation Day<\/i>\u00a0in the 193-member UNGA.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution acknowledges meditation\u2019s significance in enhancing mental well-being, fostering peace, and supporting sustainable development. India\u2019s efforts in promoting meditation and its deep connection with yoga as tools for personal and spiritual growth were pivotal in shaping this decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why was December 21 chosen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Winter Solstice:<\/strong>\u00a0In Indian tradition, it signifies the start of Uttarayana, a sacred period for introspection and inner growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complementary Date:<\/strong>\u00a0It occurs six months after June 21, which is celebrated as the International Day of Yoga, coinciding with the Summer Solstice.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>India\u2019s Role in World Meditation Day<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India has been playing an important role in supporting the World Meditation Day initiative as it is an important part of India\u2019s cultural and spiritual culture.<\/li>\n<li>The adoption of World Meditation Day aligns with India\u2019s global leadership in promoting yoga, building on the success of the International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on June 21 since 2014.<\/li>\n<li>Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, India\u2019s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted that the resolution reflects the spirit of\u00a0<i>Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam<\/i>\u00a0(&#8220;the world is one family&#8221;), emphasizing universal well-being and harmony.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>World Meditation Day Importance<\/h2>\n<p>World Meditation Day emphasizes the significance of meditation in promoting mental well-being, inner peace, and holistic health.
