{"id":53269,"date":"2025-07-03T10:25:20","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T04:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=53269"},"modified":"2025-07-03T14:05:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T08:35:08","slug":"kariyachalli-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kariyachalli-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Kariyachalli Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Kariyachalli Island Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Tamil Nadu government has started an initiative to save the sinking Kariyachalli island.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kariyachalli Island<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the <\/span><b>Gulf Of Mannar region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is one of India\u2019s most ecologically sensitive marine zones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kariyachalli is one of the 21 islands in the <\/span><b>Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located on <\/span><b>the southeastern coast of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between Rameshwaram and Thhothukudi. The gulf is home to one of the four major coral reefs in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kariyachalli island possess beaches, <\/span><b>sand dunes, spit and sandy plains.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>uninhabited island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has sunk significantly over the past few decades due to rapid erosion, rising sea levels and degradation of the surrounding coral reef and seagrass meadows.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a report by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras\u2019s (IIT Madras), Department of Ocean Engineering island\u2019s <\/span><b>landmass shrank by over 70 per cent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2024 compared to 1969.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About a third of the <\/span><b>coral around the<\/b> <b>island has bleached<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on average and further degradation and disappearance of coral reefs would make the island more vulnerable to erosion, the report stated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the current rate of erosion, the island is expected to be submerged by 2036.
