


{"id":53512,"date":"2025-07-05T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T06:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=53512"},"modified":"2025-07-05T14:17:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T08:47:58","slug":"girmitiyas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/girmitiyas\/","title":{"rendered":"Girmitiyas"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Girmitiyas Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prime Minister recently said the descendants of Girmitiyas are no longer defined by struggle but by their &#8220;success, service, and values&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Girmitiyas<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGirmitiyas\u201d were<\/span><b> Indian indentured labourer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s who <\/span><b>left India in the mid to late 19th century to work in British colonies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where many <\/span><b>eventually settled.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018girmitiya\u2019 is etymologically derived from<\/span><b> \u2018girmit\u2019, meaning \u2018agreement\u2019.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indians then pronounced \u2018agreement\u2019 as \u2018girmit\u2019, so indentured labourers who were transported to work in places like Fiji and Mauritius, became known as \u2018girmitiyas\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the <\/span><b>agreements weren\u2019t all that fair.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Indian labourers signed indentureship contracts with the British <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in hopes of higher wages and better employment opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they <\/span><b>made long treacherous journeys on old slave ships <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and upon <\/span><b>reaching foreign lands, were made to live in slave barracks, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><b>paid very little, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>did not have access to proper legal frameworks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under which they could get grievances redressed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though girmitiyas were<\/span><b> not technically slaves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the eyes of the law, they were <\/span><b>subjected to a practice known as \u201cblackbirding\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which involved <\/span><b>deceiving or tricking people to work as slaves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><b> poorly paid labourers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in countries far away from their native land.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the unfortunate history of girmitiyas, their <\/span><b>descendants have prospered in their respective countries, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some having held \u201chigh-level\u201d government positions and others having achieved success in business and arts. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/india\/indian-communitys-journey-in-trinidad-and-tobago-one-of-courage-pm-modi-3615209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DH<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cGirmitiyas\u201d were Indian indentured labourers who left India in the mid to late 19th century to work in British colonies, where many eventually settled.
