Singh Grewal as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About\u00a0 National Commission for Minorities<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>statutory body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <\/span><b>Ministry of Minority Affairs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Origin<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>January 1978,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the government set up the Minorities Commission to safeguard the interests of minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the enactment of the <\/span><b>National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Minorities Commission became a statutory body and was renamed as the National Commission for Minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCM is responsible for <\/span><b>advising the central and state governments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on matters related to the <\/span><b>welfare and development of minority communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, five religious communities-Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Zoroastrians (Parsis)-were notified as minority communities by the Union Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, with the 2014 notification, Jains were also notified as another minority community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Composition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commission consists of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Five Members<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nomination: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and five Members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nominated by the <\/span><b>Central Government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from amongst persons of eminence, ability and integrity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provided that five Members, including the Chairperson, shall be from amongst the minority communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Term: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each Member holds <\/span><b>office for a period of three years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the date of entering the office<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functions of the Commission\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Evaluate the progress of the development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of minorities under the Union and states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Monitor the working of the safeguards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for minorities provided in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indian-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Constitution<\/strong><\/a> and in laws enacted by Parliament and the state legislatures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make recommendations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the effective implementation of safeguards for the protection of the interests of minorities by the central government or state governments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look into specific complaints regarding deprivation of rights and safeguards of the minorities and take up such matters with the appropriate authorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cause studies to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be undertaken into the problems arising out of any discrimination against minorities and recommend measures for their removal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conduct studies, research, and analysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the issues relating to the socio-economic and educational development of minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggest appropriate measures in <\/span><b>respect of any minority to be undertaken<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the central government or state government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make periodical or special reports to the central government on any matter pertaining to minorities and, in particular, difficulties confronted by them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any other matter which may be referred to by the central
