Rubin Observatory recently discovered the fastest-spinning asteroid in its size class yet named 2025 MN45.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Vera C. Rubin Observatory<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located 8,684 feet above sea level atop the <\/span><b>Cerro Pach\u00f3n mountain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>Chilean Andes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where dry air and dark skies provide one of the world&#8217;s best observing locations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named after<\/span><b> American astronomer Vera C. Rubin,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who provided <\/span><b>evidence about dark matter for the first time <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 1970s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is jointly <\/span><b>funded <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the<\/span><b> U.S. National Science Foundation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Office of Science.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The observatory has four main scientific <\/span><b>goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nature of <\/span><b>dark matter and dark energy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create an<\/span><b> inventory of the asteroids, comets,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><b>objects in the solar system.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Map the Milky Way<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and help reconstruct its history.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Explore objects <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 like exploding stars and black holes \u2014 <\/span><b>that change position or brightness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centrepiece of the observatory is the <\/span><b>Simonyi Survey Telescope.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 8.4-meter telescope has the <\/span><b>world\u2019s largest digital camera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the size of a small car, weighs 2,800 kg, and boasts a staggering resolution of 3,200 megapixels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can <\/span><b>capture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about <\/span><b>45 times the area of the full moon in the sky with each exposure.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>fastest-slewing telescope in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and takes just five seconds to move and settle from one target to another.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This speed is due to the telescope\u2019s compact structure (owing to the three-mirror design) and its mount, which floats on a film of oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This observatory will provide <\/span><b>comprehensive images of the night sky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unlike anything astronomers have seen before.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will constantly <\/span><b>scan the sky of the southern hemisphere for 10 years,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creating an ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition time-lapse record of the universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will produce approximately 20 terabytes of data every night.
