text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observed annually on<\/span><b> July 11<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, World Population Day is a <\/span><b>United Nations initiative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at<\/span><b> raising awareness <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about the challenges and opportunities <\/span><b>of global population growth.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the world population now surpassing 8.2 billion, the day highlights the importance of sustainable development, equitable access to resources, reproductive rights, and gender equality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>World Population Day 2025 Theme:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018<\/span><b>Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world\u2019.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>World Population Day <\/b><b>History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WPD was <\/span><b>established by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the then-Governing Council of the <\/span><b>U<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-development-programme-to-help-waste-segregation-workers-access-government-schemes\/\" target=\"_blank\">nited Nations Development Programme (UNDP)<\/a> in 1989, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following the global interest generated by &#8220;<\/span><b>Five Billion Day&#8221; on 11 July 1987<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when the<\/span><b> world&#8217;s population reached 5 billion.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Dr KC Zachariah, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a senior demographer at the World Bank,<\/span><b> suggested that this day be commemorated.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 1990, the UN General Assembly decided to keep celebrating WPD annually to promote understanding of population issues and how they connect to the environment and development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>first WPD was celebrated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on July 11, <\/span><b>1990, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in over 90 countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts on World&#8217;s Population<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world&#8217;s population has <\/span><b>increased by over three times since<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>middle of the 20th century.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the UN, there were <\/span><b>8.2 billion people <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the planet <\/span><b>as of July 2025.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The population is predicted to <\/span><b>peak at 10.4 billion in the middle of the 2080s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having reached<\/span><b> 9.7 billion in 2050.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India leads globally with 1.46 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people, <\/span><b>followed by China&#8217;s 1.41 billion.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
