{"id":5476,"date":"2022-12-28T03:47:26","date_gmt":"2022-12-27T22:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5476"},"modified":"2025-03-27T09:03:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T03:33:44","slug":"green-methanol-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/green-methanol-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Methanol Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What is Green Methanol project?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The green methanol project involves capturing carbon from NTPC power plants and converting it into a green fuel.<\/li>\n<li>The objective of the partnership was to demonstrate technologies for firing a higher percentage of Torrefied Biomass in NTPC\u2019s coal fired units, Methanol Firing and Ammonia Firing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What is Green Methanol?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Green methanol is methanol that is <strong>produced renewably and without polluting emissions,<\/strong> one of its variants being generated from green hydrogen.<\/li>\n<li>It is a low-carbon fuel that can be made from <strong>either biomass gasification or renewable electricity and captured carbon dioxide (CO2).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This chemical compound can be used as a <strong>low-carbon liquid fuel and is a promising alternative to fossil fuels <\/strong>in areas where decarbonisation is a major challenge, such as maritime transport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Other Classifications of Methanol:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Grey methanol<\/strong>: It is obtained by synthesis reaction from methane present in natural gas (or in some cases, as in China, still from coal). It is therefore not a renewable or clean energy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Blue methanol<\/strong>: It is also obtained by synthesis derived from natural gas, but includes as part of the process the capture and storage of the carbon generated during its production, converting it into a less polluting product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) Is green methanol sustainable?<\/h3>\n<p>Green methanol is produced using only renewable energy sources ensuring that no harmful gases are emitted into the atmosphere.
