


{"id":5500,"date":"2025-11-08T11:51:02","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T06:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5500"},"modified":"2025-11-10T15:55:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T10:25:08","slug":"primary-amebic-meningoencephalitis-pam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/primary-amebic-meningoencephalitis-pam\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM):<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a rare, usually <strong>fatal, infection of<\/strong> the <strong>central nervous system<\/strong> (brain and spinal cord).<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>caused by<\/strong> a type of <strong>free-living amoeba<\/strong> (a microscopic, single-celled organism) called <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-naegleria-fowleri\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naegleria fowleri<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Naegleria fowleri <strong>occurs in shallow surface waters<\/strong> and <strong>incorrectly maintained<\/strong> swimming <strong>pools<\/strong>, <strong>hot tubs,<\/strong> and spas, <strong>particularly in warm climates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The amebas can <strong>enter the brain through the nose<\/strong> when people swim in contaminated warm, fresh water.<\/li>\n<li>The amoeba then <strong>invades the brainand meninges<\/strong> through the nose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms, which include <strong>fever, headache, vomiting, and sensitivity to light<\/strong>, typically appear <strong>within five days<\/strong> of infection and progress rapidly.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>later stages,<\/strong> one can suffer from a <strong>stiff neck, seizures, hallucinations<\/strong>, and <strong>even coma.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>There are <strong>no standard treatments<\/strong> for the treatment of PAM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combination therapy<\/strong> using medicines <strong>to treat parasites<\/strong> offers the most promise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>PAM <strong>differs from granulomatous amebic encephalitis<\/strong>, which is another very rare, usually fatal infection of the central nervous system <strong>caused by<\/strong> different free-living amebas, Acanthamoeba species or <strong>Balamuthia mandrillaris.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is amoeba?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a generic term used to refer to a group of single-celled organisms belonging to the biological kingdom Protista.
