As defined by SEBI, it involves selling a security one does not currently possess, anticipating that its value will decline. Unlike traditional investing where profit is made from rising prices, short sellers bet on a stock\u2019s fall to make a gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindenburg Adani Issue and Allegations<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindenburg Research firm claimed that Adani Group indulged in stock manipulation as well as accounting fraud. These shell companies have been created to participate in corruption, money laundering and taxpayer theft, by moving money from the listed companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindenburg Report Concerns<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary concern highlighted in the report revolves around the significant amount of debt that the Adani Group has borrowed from Indian banks. This raises a serious question about whether the business conglomerate will be able to repay its debt obligations on time. A major risk in this situation lies in the fact that many banks have lent large sums of money against shares. When a company fails to meet its debt obligations, its share prices tend to fall, thereby increasing the vulnerability of the banks\u2019 investments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding to the worry is the fact that Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), a major public sector insurer, has also invested a substantial amount in Adani Group companies. Following the report, the value of this investment dropped significantly, sparking concern among investors about potential financial losses. If these financial strains continue, it may lead to a surge in non-performing assets (NPAs) for banks.
