


{"id":5568,"date":"2024-08-28T05:11:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T23:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5568"},"modified":"2025-03-27T09:36:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T04:06:10","slug":"what-are-geoglyphs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-are-geoglyphs\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Geoglyphs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Geoglyphs:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A geoglyph refers to a <strong>design <\/strong>that is<strong> drawn on the earth<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Geoglyphs are typically <strong>formed of durable elements of the landscape<\/strong>, such as <strong>stones<\/strong>, <strong>gravel<\/strong>, or <strong>earth<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A geoglyph is usually <strong>longer than four metres<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Geoglyphs are <strong>difficult tosee<\/strong> or even identify <strong>on the ground<\/strong> but are <strong>easily appreciated when seen from the sky<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>two types<\/strong> of geoglyphs, namely a <strong>positive and negative <\/strong>geoglyph<strong>.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>positive geoglyph<\/strong> is formed by the arrangement and <strong>alignment of materials on the ground<\/strong> in a manner <strong>akin to petroforms<\/strong> (which are simply outlines created using boulders).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>negative geoglyph<\/strong> is formed by <strong>removing part of the natural ground surface<\/strong> to create differently coloured or textured ground in a manner <strong>akin to petroglyphs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There is <strong>another variation<\/strong> of a geoglyph that <strong>involves seeding plants in a special design<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The design <strong>usually takes years<\/strong> to see since it<strong> depends on the plants growing<\/strong>. This type of geoglyph is<strong> called an arborglyph.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Another type<\/strong> of geoglyph often referred to as \u2018<strong>chalk giants\u2019<\/strong> are <strong>those carved intohillsides,exposing<\/strong> the <strong>bedrock beneath.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Examples<\/strong>: The most famous geoglyphs are the <strong>Nasca lines in Peru<\/strong> and the <strong>horse and human figures cut into hillsides in southern England<\/strong> (e.g., the <strong>Uffington White Horse and the Cerne Giant<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are petroglyphs?<\/h3>\n<p>Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammerstone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/opinion\/maharashtras-geoglyphs-discovery-is-citizen-archaeology-at-its-best-it-put-india-on-the-map\/2238092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maharashtra\u2019s geoglyphs discovery is citizen archaeology at its best.
