These clusters are known as islets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists made zimislecel by growing islets from <\/span><b>pluripotent stem cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the lab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are matured into functioning islets and infused into the <\/span><b>hepatic portal vein.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hope is that these cells will take root, survive, and begin producing insulin from within the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zimislecel has the potential to restore the body\u2019s <\/span><b>ability to regulate glucose levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by restoring pancreatic islet cell function, including glucose-responsive insulin production<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lab-grown cells began <\/span><b>producing insulin again<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improving blood sugar control, preventing dangerous lows, and, in most cases, eliminating the need for insulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is Type 1 Diabetes?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a condition in which your <\/span><b>immune system destroys insulin-making cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your pancreas.
