unknown species of lichen, Allographa effusosoredica, from the richly biodiverse Western Ghats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Allographa effusosoredica<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is crustose<\/span><b> lichen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with striking effuse soredia and comparably rare chemical traits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It harboures chemical called <\/span><b>norstictic acid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is considered rare in comparison to other morphologically similar species within the genus Allographa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was studied in detail using morphological, chemical and advanced molecular techniques.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This integrative approach also unveiled its <\/span><b>algal partner, a Trentepohlia species,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adding to the sparse but growing understanding of photobiont diversity in tropical lichens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the <\/span><b>first Indian species of Allographa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ever <\/span><b>sequenced from India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also sheds light on lichen-algal symbiosis, reinforcing the concept of locally adapted photobionts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allographa effusosoredica becomes the <\/span><b>53rd species from the genus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported from India and the <\/span><b>22nd from the Western Ghats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are Lichens?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens are not just one organism but two (sometimes more) living in <\/span><b>intimate symbiosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a <\/span><b>fungus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that offers structure and protection, and a <\/span><b>photobiont<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (usually a green alga or cyanobacterium) that captures sunlight and makes food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Lichens play critical roles in ecosystems, building soil, feeding insects and serving as nature\u2019s
