in space-time caused by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some of the most <\/span><b>violent and energetic processes in the Universe.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert <\/span><b>Einstein predicted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the existence of gravitational waves<\/span><b> in 1916 in his general theory of relativity.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Einstein&#8217;s mathematics showed that <\/span><b>massive accelerating objects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (things like neutron stars or black holes orbiting each other) would <\/span><b>disrupt space-time <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in such a way that <\/span><b>&#8216;waves&#8217; of undulating space-time would propagate in all directions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away from the source.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cosmic ripples would<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel at the<\/span><b> speed of light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>carrying <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with them<\/span><b> information about their origins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as <\/span><b>clues to the nature of gravity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><b>waves squeeze and stretch anything<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their path as they pass by.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>frequency <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the wave will <\/span><b>depend on the masses <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the objects<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>strength <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><b>depend on how far away<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the event occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>strongest gravitational waves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are produced <\/span><b>by cataclysmic events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><b>colliding black holes, supernovae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (massive stars exploding at the end of their lifetimes), and <\/span><b>colliding neutron stars.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Other <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gravitational waves are predicted to be <\/span><b>caused by the rotation of neutron stars <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that are not perfect spheres, and possibly even the <\/span><b>remnants of gravitational radiation created by the Big Bang.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How do we know that Gravitational waves exist?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In 2015,<\/b> <b>scientists detected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gravitational waves for the <\/span><b>very first time.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>used <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a very sensitive instrument called <\/span><b>LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These first gravitational waves happened when<\/span><b> two black holes crashed into one another. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
