text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most DNA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>found in the nucleus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of our cells, and it\u2019s that genetic material\u2014some inherited from mom, some from dad \u2014 that makes us who we are.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dangerous mutations there <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><b>cause a range of diseases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children that can lead to muscle weakness, seizures, developmental delays, major organ failure and death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These disorders are<\/span><b> inherited exclusively through the mother<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <\/span><b>mitochondrial DNA is passed down maternally.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><b>men <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can suffer from mitochondrial disease, they <\/span><b>do not transmit it to their children.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there is<\/span><b> no cur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e for mitochondrial DNA disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> three-person IVF technique offers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a promising <\/span><b>solution <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to this.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involves a procedure in which the <\/span><b>nucleus from the mother\u2019s fertilized egg,<\/b> <b>along with the father\u2019s sperm,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is<\/span><b> transferred into a healthy donor egg <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has <\/span><b>had its own nucleus removed.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process allows the <\/span><b>child to inherit nuclear DNA from the biological parents <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>healthy mitochondrial DNA from the donor.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The procedure essentially <\/span><b>replaces the faulty mitochondrial material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the mother\u2019s egg with healthy mitochondria from the donor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
