Another title was<\/span><b> Kadaram Kondan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means &#8220;<\/span><b>Conqueror of Kedah&#8221;.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Military Campaigns:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his reign, he extended the influences of the already vast Chola empire to the <\/span><b>banks of the river Ganges in the north and across the ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He commanded the<\/span><b> largest blue water navy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indian history.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajendra\u2019s <\/span><b>territories extended to coastal Burma,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and the Maldives,<\/b> <b>conquering the kings of Srivijaya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>Sumatra, Java, and Malaya in South East Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the <\/span><b>Pegu Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with his fleet of ships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>defeated Mahipala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><b> Pala king of Bengal and Bihar.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Chola armies <\/span><b>exacted tribute from Thailand and the Khmer kingdom of Cambodia.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajendra stood as the <\/span><b>first Indian king to take his armies overseas.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In order to commemorate his victory to the Ganges <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and over the northern kings, Rajendra Chola I <\/span><b>assumed the title of \u2018Gangaikondachola\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>had a temple dedicated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Lord Shiva built, which he named<\/span><b> \u2018Gangaikondacholeshwaram Mahadev\u2019.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also <\/span><b>founded the city of \u2018Gangaikondacholapuram\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>shifted his capital there<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Thanjavur.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a <\/span><b>major center for trade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for many centuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chola Empire under him became one of the <\/span><b>wealthiest empires of the time, developing connections with Song China in the east and the Arabs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the west.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hallmark of the Chola dynasty under his rule was the <\/span><b>promotion of local self-governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, setting a unique example in administrative excellence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Religion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Rajendra followed <\/span><b>Shaivism <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a branch of Hinduism).
