V. Giri and R. Venkataraman, who resigned to contest presidential elections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Vice President\u2019s Resignation Procedure<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per Article 67 of the Constitution, the Vice President can resign anytime by submitting a written resignation to the President.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once accepted, the resignation takes immediate effect, requiring only formal communication and acknowledgment\u2014no approval process is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Article 67(a)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution allows the Vice President to resign before completing the five-year term by submitting a written resignation to the President.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jagdeep Dhankhar, who became Vice President in August 2022, invoked this article to the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Deputy Chairman, currently Harivansh Narayan Singh, will preside over the House in his absence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This seamless succession mechanism ensures that the functioning of the Rajya Sabha continues without disruption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Timeline for Vice-Presidential Election<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the President\u2019s post, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Constitution does not set a fixed deadline for filling a Vice-Presidential vacancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only stipulation is that the election be <\/span><b>conducted \u201cas soon as possible\u201d after the office falls vacant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Election Commission is responsible for announcing the schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The election is held under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, the Secretary General of aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A newly elected Vice President, in the event of a mid-term vacancy, <\/span><b>will serve a full five-year term from the date of assuming style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a crucial distinction from some other constitutional offices where successors may serve only the unexpired term.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Eligibility Criteria for Vice-President of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per Article 66 of the Indian Constitution, a person is eligible to contest for the office of Vice-President if:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is an Indian citizen,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li
