text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the<\/span><b> international food standards-setting body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>established jointly <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the <\/span><b>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in May <\/span><b>1963<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><b>Protecting consumer\u2019s health <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and ensuring f<\/span><b>air practices in the food trade.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has its <\/span><b>headquarters <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>Rome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Membership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership of the Commission is open to all Member Nations and Associate Members of FAO and WHO which are interested in international food standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently the CAC has <\/span><b>189 Codex Members <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made up of <\/span><b>188 Member Countries and<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1 Member Organization (The <\/span><b>European Union).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India became a member<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of CAC in <\/span><b>1964<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CAC consists of the following main <\/span><b>organizational elements:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commission;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive Committee;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codex Secretariat;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codex subsidiary bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commission meets in regular s<\/span><b>ession once a year,<\/b> <b>alternating between Geneva and Rome.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The programme of work of the Commission is funded through the <\/span><b>regular budgets of WHO and FAO,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>all work subject to approval of the two governing bodies of the parent organisations.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Codex Alimentarius?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Codex Alimentarius, or \u201c<\/span><b>Food Code\u201d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a collection of <\/span><b>international standards, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidelines, and codes of practice to <\/span><b>protect the health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of consumers and <\/span><b>ensure fair practices in the food trade.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codex standards are <\/span><b>used worldwide to harmonize national food safety regulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are <\/span><b>recognized in the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the international reference point for food safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When food producers and traders <\/span><b>comply with Codex standards, consumers can trust <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>safety and quality of the products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they buy, and importers can have confidence that the food they ordered will meet the specifications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
