The Constitution of India is the Supreme law that provides the outlines of governance and defines the rights, powers and the duties of the government and the citizens of India. Article 67 covers the following provisions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vice-presidents-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vice President of India<\/strong><\/a>&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenure of the Vice-President\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Election of the Vice-President<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removal of the Vice-President\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 67 of the Constitution of India<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 67 of the Constitution of India states that, \u201c The Vice President shall hold office for a term of five years from the date of which he enters upon his office. Provided that-\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Vice-President may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Vice-President may be removed from his office by a resolution of the Council of States passed by a majority of all the then members of the Council and agreed to by the House of the People; but no resolution for the purpose of this clause shall be moved unless at least fourteen days&#8217; notice has been given of the intention to move the resolution<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Vice-President shall, notwithstanding the expiration of his term, continue to hold office until his successor enters upon his office.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenure of the Vice-President of India<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President of India holds office for a term of five years from the date of entering office. However, they can continue to hold office beyond the term until a successor assumes charge. There is no limit to the number of times a person can be re-elected to the office of the Vice-President.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appointment of the Vice-President of India<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament (<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lok-sabha\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lok Sabha<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rajya-sabha\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rajya Sabha<\/strong><\/a>), using the proportional representation system with single transferable vote through secret ballot.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To be eligible, a candidate must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a citizen of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be at least 35 years of age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be qualified for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not hold any office of profit under the Government of India or any state government.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resignation of the Vice-President of India<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President may resign from office at any time by submitting a written resignation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/president-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>President of India<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resignation becomes effective once it is accepted by the President. In case of a vacancy due to resignation, fresh elections must be held as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removal of the Vice-President of India<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President can be removed through impeachment from office by a resolution of the Rajya Sabha, passed by an absolute majority and agreed to by the Lok Sabha.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, no formal impeachment process (as in the case of the President) is required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 14-day notice must be given before the resolution is taken up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grounds for removal are not specified in the Constitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse;
