For farmers, this means heavy losses and unreliable harvests.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>\u00a0Highlights of the Research<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, traditional breeding techniques have struggled to keep up with the fast-evolving onslaught of such fungal foes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have identified the gene behind <\/span><b>Somatic Embryogenesis Receptor Kinase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SERK) that can activate host defences against plant diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on the <\/span><b>AcSERK3 gene,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> part of the <\/span><b>pineapple\u2019s genetic code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known for helping plants both reproduce and survive stress, enhanced\u2014or &#8220;overexpressed&#8221; the gene in pineapple plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This genetic tweak charged the plant\u2019s natural defences, allowing it to fight off the Fusarium fungus far more effectively than ordinary varieties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Key Facts about Pineapple<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pineapple (Ananas comosus L.
